Description
The Cybersecurity Merit Badge equips Scouts with essential knowledge and skills to navigate and protect the digital world. Scouts learn about online safety, ethical behavior, cyber threats, and how to defend against them using tools like firewalls, antivirus software, and strong passwords. They explore encryption, connected devices, and the risks of public Wi-Fi, while also practicing safe habits like updating software and backing up data. Through hands-on activities, Scouts investigate real-world cyber incidents, participate in cybersecurity challenges, and explore career opportunities in the field.

Prerequisites
Disclaimer:
This merit badge is discussion-heavy and relies on active participation throughout the class, focusing on how cybersecurity concepts relate to the requirements. Scouts are expected to come prepared to participate in group discussions and share their thoughts when called on. While not required, it is strongly recommended that Scouts review the official merit badge workbook before class to help organize notes and discussion responses. Due to time constraints, not every Scout will answer every question; however, all should be ready to respond when selected.
Prerequisites and Pre-Class Preparation:
To help us complete as much of the badge as possible during the 2-hour 45-minute session, Scouts should complete the following before class:

Complete ONE of the following:
- Read a cybersecurity-related article, OR
- Watch a cybersecurity-related movie/documentary, OR
- Read a cybersecurity-related book
Be prepared to briefly discuss what you learned.

Record a short video demonstrating how to check for updates on a computer or mobile device using:
- Built-in screen recorder (Windows, macOS, Android, or iOS), OR
- Free screen recording app, such as this one, OR
- Another device recording the screen
The video only needs to clearly show the steps.

During class, Scouts will complete and discuss:
- Viewing running programs/processes
- Viewing active network connections
- Best practices for protecting a home computer or network
Because these require direct device interaction, Scouts should join from a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer whenever possible and avoid phones or tablets if possible.
Technology Requirement:
A computer is strongly recommended for full participation. Some requirements require system-level tools not available on mobile devices. Scouts without a compatible device may not be able to complete all requirements during class.
