Description
The Signs, Signals and Codes merit badge covers a number of the nonverbal ways we communicate: emergency signaling, Morse code, American Sign Language, braille, trail signs, sports officiating hand signals, traffic signs, secret codes and more.

Prerequisites
The following items are prerequisites for the workshop:
Read through the MB Pamphlet (a link is provided in the class description). Then do the tasks listed below and email me your results (don't forget to include a parent!) at [email protected]. Emailed items can be photos or videos.
- 3A—Write out your first name using Morse code. Take a photo and send it to me.
- 3B—Learn how to spell your first name using American Sign Language (ASL). Have a parent, friend, or fellow scout take a video of you spelling out your first name in ASL, and send me the video. Be prepared to sign your name during our class.
- 4B1—Have a parent, friend, or fellow scout take a video of you spelling out your first name using semaphore and send me the video. (Don't worry about having flags, just focus on your arm placement.) Helpful tip: Sometimes it helps to work with a partner. Either position their arms, or let them position yours so that the letters read correctly.
- 5A—Write your name using braille. Take a photo and send it to me.
- 5B—Create a message in braille at least six words long and share it with me.
- 7 — On a Scout outing, lay out a trail for your patrol or troop to follow. Cover at least one mile in distance and use at least six different trail signs and markers. After the Scouts have completed the trail, follow the Leave No Trace Seven Principles and the Outdoor Code by replacing or returning trail markers to their original locations.
- 9—Design your own symbol. Take a photo of your symbol, and send it to me along with an explanation of what it means. Be prepared to share this with the rest of the class if we have enough time.
- 9B—Send me your 10 favorite emojis. (Be prepared to share one with the class.)
- 10—Make up your own secret code and write a message of up to 25 words using this code. Share the message with a friend or fellow Scout. (This could be a parent.) Then share the message and code key with your counselor. (Photos of your code and key are fine.)
Please be sure to include a parent on any communications, and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. If you cannot complete these tasks before the class, you may complete them after, but you'll need to finish them to earn the Merit Badge.
